* Indications:
– Open angle glaucoma, secondary glaucoma and preoperatively in angle closure glaucoma.
– A second line drug for both tonic-clonic and partial seizures and occasionally helpful in
atypical absence, atonic and tonic seizures and centrecephalic epilepsy.
– As adjunctive treatment of edema due to congestive heart failure and drug induced oedema.
– As prophylaxis therapy against mountain sickness.
* Contraindications:
Hypokalemia, hyponatremia and hyperchloremic acidosis.
– Renal and severe hepatic impairment and suprarenal gland failure.
Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides.
– Long-term treatment in patients with chronic non-congestive angle closure glaucoma.
* Precautions and warnings:
– If used for prolonged period, monitor blood count and plasma electrolyte concentrations.
– Used carefully in pulmonary obstruction (risk of acidosis), elderly, pregnancy and
breast-feeding
– Used cautiously in patients receiving concomitant high doses of aspirin.
* Dosage and administration:
– Usual dose: 1-4 tablets daily in divided doses according to the case or as prescribed
by the physician.
